Pursuing Fitness and Musculoskeletal Health for Persons Who Are Overweight
Physical activity and exercise are essential for your health and are critical components of weight measurement. Physical activity provides you with the following benefits:
- increases energy expenditure,
- burns fat as fuel,
- increases muscle strength,
- improves the cardiovascular system, and
- enhances an overall sense of well being.
Research has demonstrated that obese persons who increase their physical activity are better able to manage their weight over the long-term. When your body is burdened with excess weigh, moving is not efficient or comfortable, and may put you at risk for injury. Exercise enables your body to move more freely, so you can accomplish daily activities, work outside the home, and enjoy your hobbies.
On The Move™ is a group program based on key principles of safe and effective exercise. Each module includes individualized assessment and exercise sessions that address all four components of fitness. Educational materials are provided to help you carry through with lifestyle changes. Each one hour class session is taught by faculty of the Program in Physical Therapy. To learn more about about our staff click here.

Both of these are available for an additional fee. Appointments can be scheduled by contacting the Washington University Physical Therapy Clinics at (314) 286-1940.
